The RSA 3072 Key & File Split and Combine
application, or simply File Splitter, is a
standalone Windows security utility designed to protect
sensitive files, private keys, recovery keys, backup files,
and other critical data by dividing them into individually
protected pieces.
The concept is simple: instead of keeping a sensitive file in
one complete location, File Splitter divides it into multiple
pieces. Every piece is required to reconstruct the
original file. If even one piece is lost, stolen,
destroyed, or otherwise unavailable, the original file cannot
be reconstructed. Each piece can also be protected with its
own password, providing an additional layer of security.
This approach can be useful for organizations implementing
security and data protection practices, including controls
that may support SOC 2 security requirements
and protocols. However, File Splitter itself does not
constitute SOC 2 compliance; organizations are responsible for
implementing and documenting their own required controls and
procedures.
A little history: I originally designed this
application specifically to protect RSA keys and other
sensitive security keys from theft or unauthorized access.
That is where the name RSA 3072 Key & File
Splitter came from. The original purpose was to
protect RSA keys, Windows BitLocker recovery keys, cloud keys,
and other sensitive security information.
As the application developed, I realized the same approach
could be useful for much more than keys. File Splitter evolved
into a general-purpose security utility for protecting
sensitive files, including backup files before they are placed
into storage, as well as other important personal and business
data.
The application was specifically designed around an
N-of-N model. Unlike systems where only a
portion of the pieces may be required, File Splitter requires
all pieces to reconstruct the original file.
If even one piece is missing, reconstruction is not possible.
This provides the strongest level of separation available
within an N-of-N model.
Keep in mind that password protection is only as strong as the
passwords you choose. Use strong, unique passwords and protect
them just as carefully as you protect the pieces themselves.
AS IS and WHERE IS. You assume all risks
associated with using this application. I cannot recover your
files if you lose a piece, forget a password, or lose any
other information required to reconstruct the original file.
Back up your files—and then back them up again.
File Splitter combines file splitting, authenticated encryption, password-derived keys, and N-of-N reconstruction into a standalone Windows utility.
Each file piece can be protected using authenticated AES-256-GCM encryption.
Password-derived encryption keys use PBKDF2 with 100,000 iterations and random salts.
Each piece can be protected with its own password, separating access to individual pieces.
All generated pieces are required to reconstruct the original file.
The process is designed to separate sensitive information into multiple protected pieces that must all be available during reconstruction.
Select the file you want to protect.
The application divides the file into multiple pieces.
Pieces can be individually protected using passwords and encryption.
Store the pieces separately according to your own security and backup procedures.
All required pieces must be available to reconstruct the original file.
The application uses multiple layers of cryptographic and file-handling protections.
File Splitter uses an N-of-N model. That means every generated piece is required to reconstruct the original file.
If one piece is missing, reconstruction cannot be completed.
This is intentionally different from threshold systems where only a subset of pieces may be required.
File Splitter does not use Shamir's Secret Sharing or a K-of-N threshold model. The design requires all pieces.
If a required piece is lost, destroyed, unavailable, or cannot be unlocked because the required password or information is missing, the original file cannot be reconstructed.
This application is provided AS IS and WHERE IS, without guarantees or warranties of any kind.
You assume all risks associated with using the application, including the risk of losing access to files, pieces, passwords, keys, or other information required for reconstruction.
I cannot recover your files if you lose a required piece, forget a password, or otherwise lose information needed to reconstruct the original file.
You are responsible for determining whether this application is appropriate for your own personal, business, security, compliance, and backup requirements.
Always maintain appropriate backups before splitting or modifying important data.
