Remember less, protect more
Long hexadecimal char passwords are very strong, and very hard to memorize. Unique Pin Gen gives you a way around that. Nothing is stored. The password is calculated fresh each time from four things you can remember:
- Month and year. The date you are generating for. Change it each month for a new password.
- Your keyword. A private word or phrase that only you know. It is hidden as you type.
- Your length. Choose 1 to 64 characters, from a short PIN to a full 64 character password.
Enter the same details and you get the same password, every time. You don't need to memorize long extended passwords.
Strong means hard to guess, not full of symbols
Password security isn't about how many special characters you can add. It's about how difficult the password is to guess. Here is a 64 character password:
E0B08AD65F5B6F6B75D18C8642A041CA1160609AF1B7DFC55AB7F2D293FD8758It uses only the numbers 0-9 and the letters A-F. There isn't a single !, @, #, or $ in it, yet it is extremely hard to guess. (Note: You can always choose to manually add special chars or symbols in your password process.) Suppose an attacker had no idea how it was generated and had to blindly try every possible 64 character hexadecimal combination:
- Possible combinations
- 1664 = 2256
≈ 1.16 × 1077 - Attacker speed
- 1 trillion (1012) guesses per second
- Time to search every option
- ≈ 3.7 × 1057 years
- Age of the universe
- about 13.8 billion years
You also don't need to remember the 64 character password. You only need to remember the inputs that generate it: a month, a year, a keyword and a hash length.
Choose your keyword carefully. The keyword is the secret ingredient. Make it long and hard for others to guess. Avoid common words and anything personal, like a pet's name.
Built for rotating codes
Use it for passwords, door codes, PINs, or any code you change on a schedule. I use it for a monthly passcode change. Pick your own routine, such as a new password every month, and recreate it on demand with your own unique process.
How it works
- Monthly code. The year and month are joined (202610) and multiplied by the month. The last four digits are the base PIN.
- Keyword sum. Every character of your keyword is converted to its ASCII value and added up.
- Final PIN. The base PIN plus the keyword sum, last four digits again.
- SHA-256. The final PIN is hashed, and the last characters of the hash, as many as you chose, become your password.
